UNC Charlotte’s

Carolina’s Conference

October 25-27, 2024

For Model UN students, by Model UN students.

Letter From The Secretary-General

Greetings!

My name is Emma Wical, and I will be your Secretary-General for the upcoming 2024 Carolina’s Conference at the end of October. As one of the most active teams in the collegiate Model UN circuit, UNC Charlotte and I are absolutely thrilled to be holding our conference once again on our beautiful urban campus. My staff and I both hope that by the end of the weekend, you will not only grow in your skills in diplomacy, resolution writing, and cooperation, but also make some fun memories and new friends.

We are excited to bring to you the best Carolina’s Conference yet, and it’s all thanks to your feedback and participation! With an array of General Assembly-style committees and a crisis committee developed by a passionate staff, we are sure that this year’s conference will be one to remember. With our new and improved Delegate and Advisor Affairs position, we look forward to bringing you fun out-of-committee activities, and a space for Model UN advisors to sit and relax while their delegates are working hard inside the committee rooms.

And, for the first time, Carolina’s Conference will be partnering with a philanthropic partner, where funds from candy grams and merch sales will be used to support our local international community in need in the greater Charlotte area. We will also be allowing the choice to write position papers, instead of making them mandatory, so that students don’t feel obligated to write papers but can if they so choose. Conference chairs will still grade those that choose to write, especially if it is for class assignments or extracurricular requirements.

We are so excited to see you all come October! Until then, stay well, research hard, and go Niners!

All the best,

Emma Wical

Our Philanthropic Partner for Carolina’s 2024

This year, Carolina’s Conference will be teaming up with ourBRIDGE for KIDS, a Charlotte based non-faith and non-profit that provides after school care and activities for refugee and immigrant children in the area. They focus on five aspects of cultural humility: self reflection, cultural responsiveness, respectful inquiry, commitment to continuous learning, and acknowledgement of power dynamics. ourBRIDGE’s team, staff, and board members represent nearly 30 countries and cultures, ensuring that children get the enrichment that they need and deserve during the after-school programs.

After-school and summer programs are not the only thing that ourBRIDGE offers. On top of cost-free childcare, they provide resources and services to refugee and immigrant families, including emergency funds, events and workshops, system navigation, and resource access. ourBRIDGE staff believes in parent autonomy, and provides them with what they need to advocate for themselves and navigate resources on their own.

Charlotte’s Model UN team has worked and volunteered with ourBRIDGE kids and staff personally, getting to know them and what they most need. Through your donations and purchasing of Candy Grams over the weekend, you are also helping out local children and the programs that they look forward to and enjoy. Funds will go towards play equipment, meals and snacks, and summer cultural outings for the kids, including places like the Catawba River Keeper and local farms.
